TENTH Annual OUTDOOR WOMEN’S EVENT

Location: The Washtenaw Sportsman’s Club Ypsilanti, Michigan  (near Ann Arbor)
Purpose: To provide an opportunity for women to learn and experience a variety of outdoor skills. To meet other women who want to participate in outdoor activities.

All weekend will be "hands on" learning. Come to participate, don't expect to prop your feet up and be waited on, but expect a GREAT time. All equipment & ammo will be furnished (except for Intermediate Archery)

HUNTRESS SAFETY CLASS - Limited to the first 12 participants that pre-register for this class. With successful completion of this class you will earn your MDNR Safety Certificate. There will be a pre-class assignment, pre-testing, class room instruction, hands on shooting instruction, final test and MUST ATTEND Friday 4-9 and Saturday 9:45-Noon. See description below for more info. (Class held in large classroom in Clubhouse)

For those not in the hunter safety class:
  • Registration and Set Up Camp:
  • Beeswax Candle Dipping
  • Hoof To Freezer - Big Game Field Dressing & Processing
  • Tomahawk and Knife throwing (near Muzzleloading range)
  • Archery: Howard Smallwood of Hog Wild Archery will work with you to set up your bow, or Q & A, or practice in the Clubhouse. (in clubhouse)
  • Bar Round (Beef) and Pot Luck for Dinner 7pm Clubhouse
  • Campfire & Camaraderie: Enjoy a nice fire under the stars, good company, women with outdoor enthusiasm, sharing stories, concerns, ideas, creating friendships, maybe even a song or two. (Between Clubhouse and shotgun range)

Class Topics (Choose Three)  (sometime the hardest part, but you can always come back next year also)
  1. Hunter Safety Course: Opportunity to EARN your MDNR Safety Certificate - for the first 12 participants that sign up for it. Mandatory attendance at class times and pre-course assignment.  You may want to go hunting for the first time or maybe out-of-state hunting. You will need a Hunter Safety Certificate, if you were born after January 1, 1960, to purchase a Michigan Hunting License. This is sure to be an enjoyable class to earn your hunter safety certificate and enjoy WWOW. This Hunter Safety Class will be one of your WWOW sessions. There will be a pre-course assignment mailed to your home before the WWOW weekend. This assignment must be completed before the start of class, 4pm on Friday. Attendance to all class sessions is required, Friday 4pm-9pm, with a break for dinner, and Saturday 8:30am-Noon. You must attend all sessions & pass a written evaluation & safe firearms handling exercise, to successfully complete this course.
  2. Basic Archery: Learn about equipment (Recurve, Long Bow, Compound) and stance; learn and practice shooting fundamentals. Try shooting form ground, tents and tree stands.
  3. Intermediate Archery: MUST PROVIDE OWN EQUIPMENT. (If you borrow a bow make sure it "fits" YOU, don't bring a 60 lb bow that you can't pull back with ease) Some experience required. Tips and practicing techniques to improve your skills. Take a nice walk around our wooded grounds and practice shooting at 3-D targets along the way.
  4. What it takes to be a hobby Beekeeper: We will be viewing an observation hive and bee keeping equipment.  We will cover the aspects of the different products of the hive.  Please visit the fascinating world of beekeeping and plan to enjoy yourself.
  5. Bird Dogs in the home: How to NEVER spoil you birddog: Is a dog in your future? Are you thinking of starting upland bird hunting? What breeds are "hyper", which are mellow? Should the dog be kept outside, or inside? Where should you get your dog? What should you look for? What do you do once you have your dog? Join us to learn about the joys of having a pointing dog in the house as part of the family.  We will talk about various breeds, what training options are, some of the equipment used, and what to expect.  A variety of breeds will be on hand to give you an idea of what they are like, and we will have demonstrations of pointing dogs in action. We will briefly discuss the differences between flushing, pointing and retrieving dogs; we will focus on the pointing breeds for this course. 
  6. Dutch oven Cooking Outdoors: See, Participate and Enjoy!
  7. Falconry - the Sport of Kings (and Queens): (1st Session only) Falconry, the art of hunting wild game with a trained raptor, is thousands of years old and is still practiced today. Falconer Cynthia Avery will introduce you to this art and its equipment, guide you through the process of becoming a falconer in the State of Michiga. We will also show a video of falconry in action.
  8. Fish ID and Casting: So you want to go fishing, what do you need to know?  Learn the art of Fly Casting and Spin Casting.  What should you have in a badic tackle box? What kind of fish is it? Learn to identify some of our typical MI fish.
  9. Fly Tying: Learn the art of Fly Tying for fly fishing or maybe a nice pendent. You get to take home your masterpieces!
  10. Kinect Karate: Learn the techniques of simple Karate. You never know when it might come in handy Hiking in the woods, hunting or just walking down the street.
  11. Knot Tying: Ever wanted to learn how to tie knots that you can use for everyday use? This class will show you how to tie: the overhand, square, two half hitches, taut-line hitch, bowline knot and the clove hitch. These knots will help you with your camping and boating experiences.
  12. Map and Compass: "Afraid of getting lost? Not knowing where you are or how to find your way? Have fun learning to use a map and compass to find your way into the woods and back out again. 
  13. Surf and Turf: Wondering what to do with your rabbit, squirrel or pheasant? Faced with a bucket of bluegills? Learn to cook Simple recipes for good hearty eating.
  14. Waterfowling 101: The art of hunting waterfowl: Learn how to: - Call Ducks and geese - Set up Decoys - Identify the different species of waterfowl - Judge Distances - Apply camouflage make-up to blend with your surroundings.  A hunting Retriever demonstration by Feather and Dakota will show a well trained retriever can bring home the game!
  15. Hunting the Wild Turkey - taught by "Grand Slam" Sue Tabor:  Whether hunting with a camera, shotgun or bow, this class will teach you all you need to start hunting the magnificent wild turkey!  Class will include discussion of both spring and fall seasons, rules and regulations, bird identification, scouting, reading signs and equipment needed.  Learn the language of the wild turkey and how they communicate with each other.  Sue will demonstrate hunting techniques and identify types and methods of calls.  You will have an opportunity during the class to try different turkey calls and visualize shot placement a turkey.  We will take a short walk at the end of the class and practice our calling and sign reading.  Since spring is the wild turkey's mating time, we may even be lucky enough to hear real birds gobble, yelp, cut or purr!
  16. Muzzle loading: Learn to load and shoot historic firearms from the revolutionary through the civil war periods from instructors in period dress. Also shoot modern-day muzzleloaders with instructors in jeans... This is truly a social sport.
  17. Rifle: 200-yard Balloon Shoot. Learn to shoot long distance using small-caliber rifles with very little recoil. The instructor will have you popping balloons like they were 20 feet away.
  18. Shotgun Shooting (Trap): Learn the basics of shooting flying clay "bird" targets with instructor Fred Rowe and his merry men. We'll just have to think of a way to cook them. Very little recoil. Shotguns are Fun.!!!!!!
  19. Small Bore Pistols & Rifles: Learn basics of safe and responsible handgun handling and shooting. Learn to shoot .22 caliber rifles and pistols. Instructors will have a variety of handguns, caliber's and ammo for you to practice with, 22, 357, 44, 45.

All session's feature hands-on learning

Experienced volunteer instructors, shooters, and outdoors persons who love their sport and want to share it with others will conduct each session.

  • 6:30p - 7:30p Bar (Beef) Round (Cooked outside on an open fire) & Potluck (Bring your favorite dish to share)
  • 8:30p - 9:30p "Hoof to Freezer" -  Big Game Field Dressing and Processing 
  • 8:30p - ?? Campfire & Camaraderie

DIRECTIONS

Traveling east on I-94, take Exit 181 to US 12 West (Michigan Avenue).
Traveling west on I-94, take Exit 181A to US 12 West.

Ellis Road is the first road left off Michigan Ave. It makes two sharp turns before heading directly south about a mile to the WSC. As the pavement ends, turn left to the WSC entrance, 5095 Ellis Road. Follow road 1/4 mile to main clubhouse on the left.
