                              MUCC Report                                             8-6-09

1) The Michigan DNR and Lt. Governor John Cherry kicked-off the opening of the "Pure Michigan Hunt" application period as Cherry and DNR Director Rebecca Humphries purchased the first two applications at Michigan-based Dunham's Sports in Madison Heights.  It gives applicants the chance to pursue the "hunt of a lifetime" and also to raise revenue for fish and game conservation, the Pure Michigan Hunt will allow three lucky hunters to hunt for elk, bear, spring and fall wild turkey, and antlerless deer all in one year.

2) Legislation to grant the Michigan Department of Ag. and Michigan Agriculture Commission exclusive authority to oversee science-based livestock care standards passed out of the House Agriculture Committee.

3) Tuesday, September 22, 2009, conservation and sportsmen's organizations will take over the state capitol in Lansing for the annual Sportsmen's Day at the Capitol, which provides a forum for sportsmen groups to interact with state legislators and other public officials about the future of hunting, fishing, trapping, and conservation in Michigan. The event is co-hosted this year by State Representative Joel Sheltrown, MUCC and the Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO).

4) Animal rights advocate Cass Sunstein, President Obama's nominee to lead the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), has met a wave of skepticism by sportsmen, farmers, and a contingent of U.S. Senators recently for his anti-hunting and animal rights convictions. President Obama's choice for the administrative regulatory position is his former University of Chicago Law School colleague and current Harvard Law Professor Cass Sunstein, a distinguished legal academic and well-known animal rights advocate who has declared publicly that hunting should be banned and animals should be granted the legal standing to sue.   To express your concerns about Sunstein's appointment, contact Senator Carl Levin and Senator Debbie Stabenow by U.S. Mail, email or by calling the Congressional Switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

5) There may be an increased in the daily harvest limit for Lake Superior lake trout.

6) Its expected that the USFWS will allow the liberal duck season (60-day, 6 duck limit) to continue this year, with the season falling between September 26, 2009, and January 31, 2010. The proposed 6-duck daily bag limit may include no more than four mallards (two hens, although traditionally MI has limited it to 1), one mottled duck, three wood ducks, two redheads, two scaup, one black duck, one canvasback and one pintail. The proposed daily bag limit of mergansers is five, only two of which may be hooded mergansers.

Geese: Generally, seasons for Canada geese would be held between September 26, 2009, and January 31, 2010, and vary in length among States and areas, with daily bag limits varying from one to three.

7) The time period for comments on proposed changes to Michigan's trout fishing regulations has been extended  until September 1, 2009. The new proposed regulations are designed to simplify current regulations on Michigan lakes and streams.
