There are many members of the Washtenaw Sportsman's Club who have distinguished themselves in competition, one of the youngest is WSC junior rifle program participant Aaron Ward. He has just finished his first year of actively competing in organized competition in air rifle and small bore shooting, and has started his second year with a pair of victories. Aaron competes in Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and USA Shooting (USAS) sanctioned matches in 3 position air rifle and small bore competition. He also has fun with the CMP's new National Match air rifle discipline, and on occasions has been known to knock down a metallic silhouette or two in Larry Medlar's monthly silhouette matches.

Aaron mostly trains and competes in Sporter class 10 meter competition, using a variant of the Daisy 888 rifles the club's junior program is equipped with. This past year he had several victories, qualified and competed in the 3-position Junior Olympics in Anniston Alabama, and has accumulated 32 of the 30 "leg match" points needed to receive the junior distinguished rifleman's badge from the CMP. This year, the CMP hosts its monthly matches at its marksmanship centers in Ohio and Alabama concurrently, and the scores from both sets of competitors are combined to determine the overall winner. Aaron started this year's season by being the Sporter rifle champion for both the September and October matches.

Aaron also competes in the 60 shot standing matches challenging the precision match rifles with his Sporter rifle, and usually ending up in the finals, placing 6th or 7th overall.

Aaron's victories over the last year include the following;

Sporter air rifle 3 position victories:
1st Place Camp Perry Monthly Matches October 2009, May 2010, September 2010, October 2010
1st place Junior Olympic qualifier for Michigan Jan 2010 and Ohio April 2010
1st Place Michigan 4-H Championship April 2010
Top 25% CMP Junior  Olympics July 2010
4th place Camp Perry Open 2010 and CMP Summer Camp championship 2010

National Match Air Rifle victories:
1st Place Camp Perry Monthly Matches October 2009, November 2009, March 2010, April 2010
1st Place National Matches August 2010 (Sporter 3x20 and match rifle 20 shot standing)

Small Bore Rifle Competition:
Bronze medal USAS Michigan Indoor 3-position championship March 2010
Bronze medals USAS Michigan 50 meter 3-position championship and English match May 2010
Bronze medal USAS Michigan 50 meter 3-position championship September 2010

1st place WSC Silhouette competition August 2010

Aaron's biggest thrill this year, aside from winning the August silhouette competition on home turf, was the standing 60 shot competition at Camp Perry this past September. Aaron opened the competition with a 99 for the first 10 shots, eventually shooting a 563/600 (again, with a Daisy sporter rifle!).

Among Aaron's goals for the coming year is a desire to take a team to the 3-position junior Olympics this year, which are being hosted at Camp Perry Ohio, he is already working with the director of the State 4-H shooting sports to assemble a composite team to make that desire a reality.

If you are a junior interested in learning to compete, start like Aaron did by showing up at the junior rifle sessions and learning from Chuck, Rodger, Jane, Paul, Andrea, and the other instructors in the junior rifle program. Learn to shoot prone and kneeling with a sling for support, and learn to love standing on your hind feet and shooting off hand. If you find you truly like it, don't be afraid, start competing. You don't even need your own rifle in some instances to compete. At the Camp Perry monthly junior and National match air rifle events, you can rent their rifles, use their prone mats, slings & kneeling rolls, and buy decent pellets to shoot. If you need a ride, car leaves our house at 6:30 AM on competition days.

We've had a lot of fun in this year's competition season, and made a lot of good friends along the way. Here's how Aaron finished off the season:

After numerous air rifle wins & high finishes Aaron was awarded the CMP distinguished air rifle badge #379.

NRA air rifle junior national championships he won overall silver medal in Sporter rifle and was the gold medalist for J1 in sporter air rifle.

At the USA shooting Junior Olympics he won the silver medal for sporter air rifle, setting two national records in the process.

USA shooting smallbore north east regional-silver medal, top junior

National matches at Camp Perry smallbore position -finished somewhere in top 15 for masters level juniors, captain of the 5th place club team in the position matches.
Aaron won the 4-H trophy in the rimfire sporter match, open sights class.

Aaron's looking forward to taking out a number of his former nemesis in the coming year.

A special thanks is extended to those in the club who've helped us out the last few years.
